It seems there is a pill for everything these days. No matter what your problems, real or imagined, there's a pill for it. But, for almost every pill to cure one problem, there's a list of other problems caused by that very same pill.
What is it with society today that makes us believe a pill can cure all of our problems? It seems that if the drug companies say it, we believe it. If they sell it, we buy it. And damn the consequences.
Are we really that stupid? Apparently the drug companies think so and absolutely their profits reflect it.
Let's just take a look at what we've been being sold. Let's look at some recently heavily advertised heartburn medication. One drug advertised as "the little purple pill", and it's next generation the "new (and no doubt improved) little purple pill", had the most wonderful commercials promising to rid you of acid reflux. They also (as required by law) stated that the pill could cause headache, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. I don't know about you but I think I'd rather just have the heartburn. Besides, what ever happened to Baking Soda?
And what's the deal with using pills to rid us of our moral dilemmas, addiction problems, behavior problems and our vast array of other personal problems? Depressed? Take a pill. Nervous about meeting new people or being involved in social events? Take a pill. Drug addiction problem? Take a pill (now that makes sense doesn't it?). Alcoholic? Overweight? Got a gambling problem or misbehaving kids? There's a pill for all these too. There's even a pill for your dog, in-case he misbehaves. Sound ridiculous? Well maybe, but it's true.
But these pills too all have their side effects. We've all heard by now from the constant barrage of law office advertisements about the effects of the famous Phen-Fen combination. Sure, everyone lost weight, but they suffered heart and respiratory problems too. Yeah, it's got to be great to be thin - and dying. There are attorneys advertising lawsuits against Redux too. Remember that was the popular pill that came along to save us from the Phen-Fen nightmare while creating it's own little nightmare.
Then came Meridia. It advertises similar side effects, but, it probably wouldn't hurt you would it? Hmmm, sounds to me like yet another nightmare. But, you know, there's probably a pill out there that will stop all these damn recurrent nightmares too!
Then there are all the psychotropics. Of course they're not blatantly advertised as "psychotropics", no, that might be too scary. It might make you pause to wonder if they could cause you or your kids to become suicidal murderers. So, instead they are advertised as "happy pills" created to make happy, confident people out of their users. They even have cartoons in some of their advertisements. But when was the last time you saw a gruesome mass murder or murder/suicide on the news and it turned out to be someone who wasn't on some type of psych drug or combination of psych drugs? Follow the most horrific stories in the news for a few months and you will see, it always ends up coming out that the perpetrator was on psych drugs. Do the research. It's sickening.
Aside from the rash of violent crime perpetrated by those on psych drugs, let's look at some other possible side effects listed by the manufacturers themselves. Are you ready for this? O.K. Dry mouth, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, and sexual side effects. Now that'll make you depressed, won't it?
These drugs are used to handle depression, anxiety, inability to concentrate, and a whole host of other emotional problems that most of us experience on a daily basis due to the normal pressures of life and relationships. So, what ever happened to talking to your pastor or minister, or rabbi? Didn't our parents' and grandparents' generation handle their problems that way? And by the way, you'll notice that they didn't have children killing children in school either. Gee, you think there's a connection?
And it's not only the "harder" drugs. Now there's a lawsuit against the makers of PPA, a common ingredient in cough syrup. It apparently causes "hemorrhagic stroke, bleeding in the brain, heart attack, kidney failure, and death" according to the attorneys. Wouldn't you rather just deal with the cough? Or how about a hot tottie? Isn't that what grandma did?
And who wants to trade their fungal infection of the nails for some heart and liver problems? That sounds like a deal doesn't it?
A headache which could probably be cured with a good massage therapist, can also (according to it's manufacturers) be cured with a pill. Of course the side effects are risk of serious heart and liver problems.
All you have to do is turn on your T.V. and it won't be long until you see a commercial for some magic pill, there to solve all your problems. But let's face the facts, we're not fat because we haven't taken the magic pill. We're fat because we eat bad and don't exercises. We don't' see life's stresses effecting us more and more because we have "chemical imbalances" and must be medicated, it's because we don't practice the simple basics that our forefathers did such as clean, simple living and seeking advise from our religious/spiritual leaders. Our kids act up not because there is something wrong with them, they act up because we don't have good control over them, and we have dropped out almost all moral education from their lives. There are also barriers to learningwhich can cause actual physical symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness, an inability to concentrate, and extreme irritability. All of which could be quickly and easily solved by someone trained in L. Ron Hubbard's Study Technology. There are also severe behavior problems that are caused by allergies. Once the allergy is discovered, the problem can be solved simply by avoiding the irritant. We are not going to solve our relationship and social problems with a pill. There is no magic pill that is going to make you more likable and outgoing without also giving you some serious problems. And does anybody really believe that taking a drug to fight a drug (or any other) addiction makes any sense?
Nowadays, if you are upset over some event in your life, the doctor can just prescribe you some tranquilizers, as if being numb to everything will solve the problem. If your partner is cheating on you or you have trouble handling the kids, if you lose your job, or have to keep a stressful job--- well, just take a pill.
In light of our amazing abilities, vast knowledge, and cutting edge technology,it just seems so very strange that we, any of us, could actually buy all of this -- but, we do. We spend billions every year trying to buy that magic pill that will solve all our problems. And we've apparently completely forgotten all about basic health measures such as natural remedies, and clean living, self-restraint, spiritual values, and personal responsibility. It just seems so much easier to take a pill than to take control or take responsibility.
So, where is all this leading us? It seems to me that it's only making us worse for the wear and not solving anything. Sure there are miracle drugs which solve real problems, and certainly there are some that save lives. But if we are going to progress as a society, as a species, we've got to stop drugging and start thinking. And that indeed, may be a very tough pill to swallow.
